St. Germain

Big St. Germain Lake

Surrounded by numerous muskie waters in Vilas and Oneida Counties, Big St. Germain Lake holds its own as a consistent producer of quality muskies with plenty of action. Big St. Germain Lake is 1,617 acres with a maximum depth of 42 feet. The lake also connects to 244 acre Lake Content and 22 acre Fawn Lake, with all of the lakes holding muskie. The lakes are very fertile, with expansive flats and shorelines covered with aquatic vegetation. Big St. Germain’s fairly clear water is also home to an exceptional walleye and perch fishery.

Numerous fishing techniques can be deployed on the lakes to entice some nice muskies to take your offerings. In the spring, smaller bucktails, twitch baits, jerk baits, and soft plastics in natural or neutral colors work best. Work your baits over newly emerging vegetation on the flats areas, plus the shallow bays and the shallow humps that warm up quicker during a sunny spring day.

When summer approaches, hold on, and be prepared for some heavy action with your favorite fishing pattern. Everything from top-water to suspended fishing is working now, with some very good night fishing action to fill your day. Mix up your presentation, use big lures worked slowly to entice the biters, and use fast erratic lures to attract as well. Keep changing up and let the muskies dictate what they want for this time of the season…this day…or during the hour.

As fall arrives, big lures are the ticket for success. Work large jerk baits, cranks, bucktails, and soft plastics parallel to the deep edges of the vegetation. Dragging a sucker along these edges can produce some bonus muskies as well. During those warm fall days, move up shallower on top of the flats of aquatic vegetation and on the humps with jerk baits and bucktails even if the vegetation is dying…as long as the produce is still standing, it will be holding baitfish to attract the bigger fish that you are after.

Big St. Germain has the reputation of producing big fish and should be a destination for any serious muskie angler looking for their personal best. However, with that being said, Big St. Germain is an easy lake to fish and should be a consideration for those anglers looking to get in to the sport of muskie fishing and learn the science and art of muskie angling.
