Conklin and Brzezinski Prevail at Pelican

On Sunday August 6th,the WMT wrapped up the last of the one-day tournaments for the 2006 season and the Eastern region. A full field of participants would score on fifteen legal muskies for the event.

With perfect overcast conditions and slight breeze for the start of the competition at 6:00am, it didn’t take long for the first muskie to be registered by Steve Zangl and Justin Norenberg when they scored a nice 40 ½ incher at 6:25am. The next muskie of the day would follow shortly afterwards at 6:38am when Chris Conklin and Pete Brzezinski tallied another nice fish measuring 39 ¼ inches. By 8:58am, the tourney would be decided when Conklin and Brzezinski scored on their second muskie of the day, a 45 ½ incher that also earned them big fish of the day honors. This team was the only team to double-up on Pelican Lake and would earn them first place honors. Conklin and Brzezinski were on a pattern before the competition started and had hoped their soft plastic presentation, along with deep weed edges would hold up for the tournament day. Obviously, it was a successful pattern!

The team of Bob Cook and Steve Schneider would tally a 39 incher at 9:47am that would give the duo a fifth place finish. At 11:00am, Phil Graham and Kevin Black, past Pelican Lake WMT Champions, scored on a 39 ½ inch muskie that landed them fourth place. The biggest muskie of the afternoon would score in at 41 ¼ inches at 1:24pm by Phil Schweik and Pete Hilman. The team would fish extremely shallow water and into bullrushes to bay their muskie.

The WMT’s Pelican Lake tournament finished as follows:

2nd place: Phil Schweik and Pete Hilman 41 ¼”
3rd place: Steve Zangl and Justin Norenberg 40 ½”
4th place: Phil Graham and Kevin Black 39 ½”
5th place: Steve Schneider and Bob Cook 39”
6TH place: Kent Stadler and Jeff Langlois 38”
7th place: Mark Gillich and Joey Rozanski 37”
8th place: John Bennett and Brent Kiedrowski 36 ¾”
9th place: Gary Zaug and Keith DeFatte 36 ½”
10th place: Ryan Blair and Matt McCumber 35 ½”
11th place: Don Grant and Dave Laska 34 ½””
12TH place: Jeff Danielski and Matt McNelly 34 ¼” @ 11:58am
13th place: Bob and Scot Miesbauer 34”
13th place: Gene and Dan Schulz 34 ¼” @ 2:32pm
